Every now and then I feel like making something that looks fancy, but is actually super easy. And this week I kept seeing candied orange slices everywhere on Pinterest… so of course I had to try them!

They turned out sweet, glossy, slightly chewy, and honestly so pretty.

You can use them to decorate cakes, cookies, cupcakes, or even add them to hot tea. They’re also perfect if you want a homemade edible gift idea!

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • 2 oranges (sliced into thin rounds)
  • 1 cup sugar (200 g)
  • 1 cup water (240 ml)
  • Extra sugar for coating (optional)

How to Make Candied Orange Slices

Let’s start!

Step 1:

Wash the oranges really well, then slice them into thin rounds (about ¼ inch / 0.5 cm). Try to keep them similar in thickness so they cook evenly.

In a large pan, add the sugar and water. Heat over medium heat and stir until the sugar fully dissolves.

Step 3:

Add the orange slices in a single layer (or as flat as possible). Lower the heat and let them simmer gently for 35 to 45 minutes, flipping them carefully halfway through.

You’ll know they’re ready when the slices look slightly transparent and glossy.

Step 4:

Remove the slices and place them on a baking rack or parchment paper. Let them dry for 1–2 hours (or longer if you want them less sticky).

Optional Step 5 (Extra Pretty!):

If you want that sparkling Pinterest look, lightly coat the slices in sugar once they’re mostly dry.

Easy Tips (You’ll Love!)

Before you leave, I have a few simple tips that you’ll love!

  • Don’t boil too hard! A gentle simmer keeps the slices whole and beautiful.
  • Save the leftover orange syrup for tea, pancakes, or cocktails.
  • Slice them thin for the prettiest look! The thinner the orange slices, the more “stained glass” they look once candied (and they dry faster too!).
